Paving.-In constructing roads, tramways, footpaths, floors, and the like, blocks composed of terra-cotta, fireclay, gannister, concrete, wood, asphalt, slag, granite, stone, or grit stone are made with upper and lower portions, or upper portions only, of reduced size, so as to form spaces which are filled up with pitch or hot asphalt &c. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper and lower portions C of the reversible blocks A are of octagonal shape and contain cavities I which, together with the spaces D, are filled with pitch or the like E. The openings J in the blocks facilitate equal burning of the material in a kiln. In other forms, oblong blocks, arranged in line or so as to break joint, have upper rabbeted edges, and are sometimes provided with corresponding projections and cut away portions to form dovetail, circular, square, or V joints. The rabbeted edges are of rectangular, angular, quadrantal, or other shape. The blocks shown in Fig. 12 have cloth covered with bitumen E between the joints. Tramway rails carrying an electric current are protected by waterproofing-layers of canvas 0, Fig. 25, which may extend to the rail surface. Fig. 29 shows the blocks provided with inset facing-blocks which may consist of granite, wood, stone, or grit stone. Figs. 32 and 33 show blocks provided with square, angular, and bevelled surfaces to give a foothold. Blocks of T, U, and L shape are also used for tramways.
