Abstract

17,224. Coles, S. O. Cowper-. Aug. 15. Armour-plating.-Aluminium or aluminium alloy is cast around a strengthening-skeleton consisting of wire rods or bands of steel arranged so as to provide a series of recesses or projections, or both. The plates thus formed may be faced with plates of steel or other metal, or may be built up with a series of different alloys of varying degrees of hardness. In the form shown in Fig. 3, layers of interlaced wires a are employed, and the plate is faced with a sheet c of steel &c., which may have projecting lugs to prevent separation from the aluminium backing. Fig. 4 shows a construction in which the skeleton consists of bands d arranged so that recesses or gaps are formed between the adjacent bands composing each layer, the gaps in one layer alternating with the gaps in the other layer. In a modification, a series of parallel bars or rods rest upon a second series of parallel bars or rods arranged at right-angles to those of the first series. In a further modification layers of interlaced wires are arranged in pairs, and a layer of hard steel balls is placed between the layers forming each pair. The steel wire &c. may be retempered after the aluminium &c. has been cast around it.
