Abstract
15,973. Melling, J. W. July 28. Brakes.-Relates to means for automatically compensating for wear in brakes in winding-machines &c., in which a screwed operating - rod is rotated within its nut by a ratchet-device in order to alter the effective working length of the rod. A screwed coupling-rod c, Fig. 1, bears within a nut d on one brake post a<1>, the other end of the rod being rotatably connected to a bell - crank operating-lever e, to the fulcrum f of which is attached the other brake post a. Secured to the rod c is a ratchet-wheel i engaged by a pawl k pivoted on a frame j which engages an inclined bar m, Figs. 1 and 5, carried by the post a. As the lever e is operated by the rod g to apply the brakes to the drum b, the pawl is rotated relatively to the ratchet-wheel and, when the wear is sufficient, will take up a tooth of the wheel, and rotate the rod c in its nut d. The rod is prevented from turning accidentally by an adjustable spring-pressed block carried in a case n. One brake post may be dispensed with. Fig. 8 shows the application to a band brake q, one end of which is fixed and the other engaged by a screwed rod c, the bar m being carried by the fixed part a<3>.
