Chucks.-In a chuck especially applicable to turret lathes, longitudinal motion is given to the shaft C, to close the jaws, by means of inclines on the end of the hollow spindle A co-acting with inclines d<1>, Figs. 1 and 3, on a collar D. The collar is rotated by slots in a sliding sleeve E engaging pins d<2> on the collar, and the motion obtained by the inclines is transmitted through thrust-collars c' to the shaft C. Ball bearings are employed as shown, and a spring may be interposed to prevent shock.
