Abstract

15,229. Bevis, R. R., and Gibson, J. H. July 18. Air-pumps, steam-engine and lilce.-In air-pumps for the separate removal of air and water from the condenser, the air passes down a pipe 18 to ports 15 in the pump barrel 1 ; these parts are uncovered when the bucket 6 is at the bottom end of its stroke, and the water passes down a pipe 16 and through a foot valve 5 to the space below the bucket, which is dished to provide a water seal for the valves 7. The water and air do not therefore mingle to any great extent until they are both above the bucket, thus avoiding excessive frothing; they are delivered together through head valves 9, the water escaping down a pipe 22 and the air up a pipe 21. The valves 9 are mounted in a cupped cover 8 forming a water seal. A curved deflector plate 19 is arranged over the inlet end of the air pipe 18 in the condenser 17, to prevent the entry of water and vapour.
