Abstract

13,994. Franz, L. July 1. Peat, preparing.-In a process for preparing peat in the manufactare of piper and cardboard, the peat is prassed into an endless rope an cut up into disks of approximately equal thickness ; the diske are broken up into single tibres, and coarse foreign constituents such as wood are separated by a centrifugal classifying-apparatus, the fibres are washed and reduced to half-stuff which is passed through another centrifugal classifying-apparatus; and each of the various grades of half-stuff is passed to a mixing-beater where it is mixed with appropriate half-stuff made of waste paper, wood, cellulose, or the like, and made into paper or cardboard in the ordinary way. The operations are carried out by apparatus of known kinds. The disks are formed in a machine comprising a hopper, a revolving endless screw which forces the material through a nozzle or orifice, and a revolving knife. The disks are broken up by cutters aided by water. The first centrifugal classifying-apparatus comprises a centrifugal drum having vertical slots in the peripheral wall and a sieve or screen surrounding the drum. The peat passes through the screen while the coarser foreign material is retained. The washing-apparatus comprises a rotary sieve drum supported on rollers and having a helical conveyer and a water pipe. The fibres are reduced to halfstuff in a machine such as that described in Specification No. 13,592, A.D. 1905, [Abridgment Class Paper &c.].
