13,513. Armstrong, J. June 25. [Patent of Addition to No. 20,543, A.D. 1904.] Retort furnaces.-In furnaces for heating zinc ores as described in Specification No. 20,543, A.D. 1904, the vertical heating-flues are replaced by a series of superimposed, independently-fired horizontal flues b ; serpentine air-heating passages g are arranged contiguous to the flues b, and tubes h are employed instead of the gills to connect the upper parts of the retorts with the condenser. The condenser, which may be filled with charcoal, coke, or other carbonaceous matter, is extended below the level of the retorts and the charge may constitute its own seal at the lower end of the retort or a solid or hollow bottom may be provided. When a hollow bottom is provided, it may be heated underneath by a flue parallel to the flues b. The furnace is shown in plan in Fig. 1 and in vertical section in Fig. 3. Gas is supplied to each of the flues b from a valved pipe e, and the air for combustion passes from a valved pipe f to the serpentine flue g and is delivered to the gas from openings m. The hot air in the flues g may be mixed with cold air from a pipe f<1> to regulate the temperature. From the flues b, the products of combustion escape through dampered openings to the outlet flues c. The top of each retort is closed by a door, and when a bottom is provided the charge remains undisturbed until distillation is complete. The residues are then withdrawn through openings R, a seal being left at the bottom of each retort when lead is present so as to exclude atmospheric air. The furnace is stated to be applicable for the distillation of volatile metals such as mercury, antimony, &c., and for the separation of such metals from non-volatile metals.
