Abstract
12,862. Hadaway, J. B. June 17, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Paring; uppers.-A machine for trimming off the projecting edges of the vamp and lining of a lasted shoe preparatory to sewing comprises a roll for raising the vamp and lining from the insole and directing them towards the trimming-knives, a vibrating trimming-knife arranged to work across the upper end of the roll, a co-operating knife which may be separate from, attached to, or integral with the roll, and a vibrating vamp-bending device arranged to bend the vamp inwards so that it can pass between the cutting-edges of the knives. The guiding-roll 1, which is preferably frustoconical in shape, is threaded on to the lower end of a vertically-adjustable shaft 2, which is driven by belt and worm gearing from a main shaft 3 through an intermediate shaft 7. The roll is driven at a speed somewhat in excess of the feed of the shoe, and is provided with spiral ribs or corrugations which exert an outward stretching action on the lining. The upper end of the roll constitutes the co-operating trimming-knife, the main trimming- knife 12, which is curved in an arc of a circle, being clamped in a carrier 15. This carrier is pivotally hung on screw pins threaded into the machine frame on either side of the shaft 2, and is given a rapid reciprocating movement from an eccentric on the shaft 3. A lug on the knife moves in guides formed in a projection from a verticallyadjustable block 21, so as to maintain the knife accurately in its proper position during its forward and return movements across the upper face of the roll. The vamp-bending device 23 consists of a curved leaf spring, the free end of which is provided with an upturned portion 24 and a laterallyextending portion 25, the former of which is arranged to engage the vamp before it reaches the knives, while the latter extends beneath the knife 12 so as to prevent the knife from coming into contact with the lasting-tacks. The other end of the spring is bent downwards and adjustably clamped in a carrier 27, which is rapidly oscillated by means of an eccentric on the shaft 3. The vamp-bending device not only bends the work inwards but holds it in position while it is being trimmed. If desired, it may be arranged to press the vamp into the shoulder at the edge of the insole.
