iBe it known that 1, JOHN B. HADAWAY, citizen .of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the. county of Plymouth and off the projecting edges of the vamp and li-nmg after the shoe has been lasted so that the instrumentalities of the inseam sewing machine and particularly of the looper may not be interfered with. during the subsequent op.- eration of sewing the upper and welt to the insole. Heretofore this trimming operation has usually been performed by hand and the object of the present invention is to provide a machine by which the projecting edges of the vamp and lining can be quickly trimmed off in the desired manner without liability of injury to the shoe.
The several features of the present invention relate to means for causing the vamp and lining to be properly presented to the trimming knife or knives so as to be trimmed in a satisfactory manner at all portions of the shoe, to the construction and arrangement of the vamp trimming knives whereby they are enabled readily to sever the vamp and lining, to means for preventing the cutting edges of the vamp trimming knives from coming in contact with the lasting tacks, and to the relative arrangement of the vamp trimming knives and the means for presenting the vamp and lining to the knives whereby the shoe being operated upon can be readily manipulated to present the desired portions of the shoe to the knives.
In the machine hereinafter specifically described as embodying the various features of the present invention a roll is provided arranged to extend inside of the vamp .and lining of a lasted shoe and to raise the vamp and lining away from the insole and direct them between the cutting edges of the trimming knives. This roll is rotated so that the surface in contact with the lining moves in the direction of feed and the rod is provided.

To bring the trimming knives and the guiding roll into as small a space as possible so as .to enable narrow toed shoes to be operated upon and alsoto permit the shoe to be swung without interfering with the operating of the knives, the guiding roll is so arranged that the trimming knife works across the u )per end of the roll, that is, the end of the rol remote from the sole of the shoe. rangement of the roll and trimming knife is considered to constitute a feature of the present invention which is not limited to a the roll necessarily acts to stretch the lining transversely to the direction of feed. In accordance with this feature of the invention the cooperating knife may be of any suitable construction and may be separate from or attached to the roll. To secure as simple and compact a construction as possible, however, the cooperating knife is preferably formed integral ground off so that the roll presents a cutting edge at the upper end of its peripheral surface. The trimming knife may be of any suitable construction but preferably is a vibrating knife as it has been found in actual practice that a vibrating knife is best adapted to operate on the vamp and lining of a shoe. To crate without liability of engaging the lasting tacks which project from the shoe upper it is preferably mounted to move about an axis extending substantially parallel to the line of feed and located in a plane above the plane of the solg. of the shoe which is being operated upon. vAt certain portions of the shoe, however, and
particularly near the toe, the vamp and lining project outwardly, and it is necessary at such points that the vamp and lining be bent inwardly toward the medial line of the shoe in order that they may pass between the cutting edges'of the knives. To secure this resuit a feature of the present invention contemplates thejprovision of means for bending the vamp inwardly toward the medial line of the shoe. Broadly considered this feature of the invention contemplates the useof any suitable means for accomplishing this result. Preferably, however, a vibrating vamp bending device is' provided which acts at each reciprocation. of the vibrating trimming knife to engage the projecting edge of the vamp in proximity to the knife and bend it inwardly so that it can pass between the cutting edge of the knives. The material operated upon by the trimming knives varies in I acts to bend the projecting edge ofthe' vamp inwardly but also forces the bent in portion of the vamp in the direction of feed so that any liability is avoided of a fold in the blank being pressed in the opposite direction fromtheline of feed and being finally allowed to escape beneath the vamp bending device and the vamp trimming knife. g
In the machine hereinafter described the vamp bending device above referred to pro- I jects beneath the plane in which the cutting edge of the vibrating trimming knife operates'and thus acts as a guard to prevent the cutting edge of the knife from comin in contact with the tacks. The rovision o a guard to prevent the cutting e go of the trimming knlfe from coming in contact with the lasting tacks is considered to be a feature of the present invention whether or not this guard also performs the further function of a vamp bending device.
In addition to the features of invention above referred to the machine hereinafter described embodies other features of invention hereinafter described and claimed the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the following description. The guiding roll which engages thelining and directs the vamp and lining between the cutting edges of the trimming knives is indicated at 1, and. as shown, is arranged with its lower enddirected downwardly so as to engage the sole of a shoe placed in the machine. The roll is secured to the lower end of a vertical shaft 2- by being screw-threaded thereon, the lower end of the shaft being rovided with a screw-threaded portion an with a shoulder above the screw-threaded portion against which the upper end of the roll abuts.

cache? the trimmed edges of the vamp and lining The'upper end of the guide roll constitutes one of the trimming knives, and in order that the end of the roll may .be brought to the desired position with relation to the other trimming knife, the machine illustrated in the drawings is provided with means whereby the shaft 2 can 'be adjusted vertically. To this end the wornrwheel 9 has a screw-threaded engagement with the shaft-'2 and the wheel is locked rigidly to the shaft by means .of a clamping bolt 10 passing through the hub .of the wheel and provided with a recess :toreceive the'shaft 2 .as clearly indicated in Fig. .4. By :loosening the clamping bolt 10, the worm wheel-9 is released from the shaft and the shaft can be rotated and thereby moved either up or .down :by reason of its screw-threaded engagement with the wheel. The wheel is held against longitudinal movement between the u per end of the bearing for the shaft 2 an an adjustable sleeve 11 having .a screw-threaded enagement with the :frame of the machine, as indicated in-Figs. 4 and 5;

The blade .of this :knife is curved in the arc/of a circle and is-secured by means of a clamp 13and bolt 14 to a knife carrier 15. This carrier is pivotall-y mounted upon the frame of the machine by means of two pivot pins 116 and 17 which have a screw-threaded engagement with the machine frame and extend into bosses proj ecting :from the carrier 15 on each side of the shaft 2. This construction is best illustrated in Fig. 6. The knife 12 is so arranged that its cutting edge moves across the upper end of the .roll 1 toward and from the shaft 2, the centerof the cutting edge, as best shown in Fig. 7, .moving diametrically across the roll. During the operation of the machine a .rapid vibrating movement is imparted to the knife carrier 'by means of an eccentric secured to the shaft 3 and an eccentric link and strap 18 connecting theeccentric and an arm projecting upwardly from the knife carrier. l'lf' hen the knife 12 is in its retracted position its cutting edge is separated from the roll 1, and in order to keep the cutting edge of the knife in proper position with relation to the upper end of the roll, the knife is provided with a forward projection 19 which passes across the upper end of the roll atone side of the shaft 2. To maintain the knife 12 accurately in its proper position during both its forward and retracting strokes, a guide is provided for the projection 19 of the knife. This guide is indicated at 20'and consists of a suitable guideway formed in a projection from a block 21, secured to the frame of the machine by means of a clamping screw 22 so as to be ca able of vertical adjustment.

A rapid vibrating. movement is imparted to the vamp bending device from an eccentric on the main shaft 3 by means of an eccentric strap and link 28 pivotally connected to an arm extending upwardly from the carrier 27. T he pivot pm which connects the link 28 to the arm of the carrier 27 is adjustably secured. in a slot in the link 28 so that the vamp bending device can be adjusted toward or from the guide roll to suit the thickness of material being operated upon. At each forward movement of the vamp bending device it engages the vamp and bends it inwardly so that it can pass between the cutting edges of the trimming knives. It will be noted from an inspection of Figsn-S and 7 that'thc portion 241 of the I vamp bending device is arranged at an angle to the path of motion of the bending device so that it acts not only to bend a portion of the vamp inwardly but to force the bent in portion in the direction of feed and thereby prevent a fold of the vamp from escaping beneath the bending device and vibrating trimming knife. The eccentrics from which the vi- 'brating trimming knife and bending device are actuated are secured tothe shaft 3 at an angular distance apart 90 and are so arranged, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2, that the vamp bending device advances and engages the vamp and imme diately thereafter and while the vamp is held ;by the vamp bending device the trimming knife advances and makes its cutting stroke. The vamp bending device thus acts not only to bend the vamp inwardly but also to hold the vamp in position while it is beingtrimmed. T he vamp bending device engages he vamp at each forward movement and yitlds more or less according to the thickness ef the materials.
By reason of the fact that the vamp bending device comprises a leaf spring it can be vibrated at a high rate of speed and still be caused to yieldingly engage the vamp at each actuation. The shoe is presented tothe machine by the operator, the guide roll 1 extending inside of the vamp and lining with its lower end resting against the sole of a shoe. The vibrating trimming knife-and vamp bending device are operated at a high rate of speed and asthe shoe is fed along by the operator, the vamp and lining are resented to the cutting edges of the knives y the roll and vamp bendmg device and the vamp andlining are trimmed at a distance from the sole deter mined by the height of the roll 1. on account of the fact that the knife carrier is-mounted upon an axis above the roll 1 and substantially arallel to the directionof feed. The invention having been thus described, what is claimed is 1. A vamp trimming machine, having, in combination, a trimmm knife to trim the edge of thevamp of a lasted shoe, and a guard arranged to en age the lasting tacks andprevent the knife edge from coming in contact with the lasting tacks.

15. A vamp trimming machine, having, in combination, a guiding roll for the vamp and lining, a vibrating trimming knife working across the end of thevguiding roll, and a knife on the endof the guiding roll cooperating with the vibrating knife to trim the vamp and lining.

A vamp trimming machine, having, in combination, a guiding roll for the vamp and lining having one end directed toward the sole of a shoe placed in the machine, a vibrating trimming knife working across the other end of the roll and a knife on the guiding roll cooperating with the vibrating knife to trim the vamp and lining, and means for rotating the roll.

A vamp trimming machine, having, in combination, a guidin roll for the vamp and linin having one end directed toward the sole of a shoe placed in the machine and being constructed to stretch the lining transversely to the direction of feed, a trimming knife working across the other end of the roll, a knife cooperating with said'trimming knife to trim'the vamp and lining and means for rotating the roll.

A. vamp trimming machine, having, in combination, a guiding roll for the vamp and lining having one end directed toward the sole of a shoe placed in the machine, a vibrating trimming knife mounted to move about an axis substantially parallel to the direction in which the work is fed to the knife and provided with a projection extending beyondthe cutting edge of the knife, a knife on the roll cooperating with the vibrating knife to trim the vamp and lining, means for rotating the roll, and a guide for the projectionon the vibrating knife.

A vamp trimming machine, having, in combination, a guiding roll for the vamp and lining having one end directed toward the sole of a shoe placed in the machine, a trimming knife working across the other end of the roll, a knife on the guiding roll cooperating with the t imming knife to trim the vamp and lining, a shaft to which the roll is secured, a gear havin a screvv-tl1readed engagement with the shaft, and a clampin device for clamping the gear to the shaft, whereby the shaft can be released from thegear and rotated to adjust the guiding roll. 24..
