Abstract

12,657. Margonari, V. June 12. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Printing-surfaces.-A flong for preparing stereotype and like matrices is formed by coating sheets of silk paper, preferably previously treated with alum, tannin, or formaldehyde, with a paste consisting of a filling mass such as carbonate or sulphate of lime, carbonate of magnesia, zinc white, baryta or kaolin, a viscous substance such as starch, dextrin, or glue, a hardening substance such as alum, formaldehyde, tannin, &c., and a preservative such as camphor, to which castor oil or other fat is added to facilitate the separation of the matrix from the forme without the interposition of a sheet of thin paper. The matrix, after having been pressed or beaten into the heated forme in the usual way, is filled in at the back by a sheet of cardboard coated on the side next to the matrix with a paste consisting of dextrin, calcium carbonate, kaolin, magnesia, whitening, or the like, and alum. Stereotype plates may be cast in the usual way from these matrices and may afterwards be rendered more durable by a light electro-coating of copper or nickel. Printing-plates of celluloid may be prepared by pressing a sheet of celluloid softened by heating to 120‹-150‹ in contact with the matrix between two heated steel plates.
