Abstract

Switches.-A combined contact-breaker and distributor for use in electric ignition systems of internal-combustion engines consists of an external stationary insulating-cylinder A having on its interior surface segments connecting with the high tension sparking - plug terminals A2, A3, A5, A6 and with the low-tension terminal A1. With. in this cylinder is a second insulating - cylinder C carrying spring-pressed brushes D engaging the segments in the cylinder A, and spring-pressed brushes E adapted to contact with the segment of the rotary distributing-commutator G. A brush K leads in the high-tension current from the terminal A4 to the ring J on the commutator G, whence it is distributed by the segment F to the sparking-plug terminal brushes. The primary circuit is made and broken at the contacts 0, N, the contact N being carried by a spring on an arm M, which is actuated by a cam Q carried on the commutator shaft L. In order to minimize sparking at the contacts, this cam is of such a shape that the high-tension circuit is closed before the low-tension circuit is made, and the low-tension circuit is broken before the high-tension circuit is opened. The period of ignition is varied by rotating the sleeve C by means of the handle H, the heavy hightension cables attached to the terminals on the outer casing A being undisturbed by the regulation. The cylinder A is attached to the base-plate S by means of the device shown in Fig. 4, which comprises two arms R R, pivoted at T, TI and attached to each other by the spring U ; these arms carry slotted extensions which engage headed pins V, V1, Fig. 2, fixed to the cylinder A and passing through the base-plate S.
