C. J. MYERS.
TIMER FOR IGNITION CIRCUITS 0F ENGINES. APPLICATION FILED APR. 6, 1918.
1,361,088, Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
AWN EH70 v BY W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLYDE T. MYERS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO SWARTZ ELECTRIC COM- PANY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
TIMER FOR IGNITION-CIRCUITS OF ENGINES.
Application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE J. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residin at Indianapolis, Marion county, and tate of Indiana, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Timers for Ignition-Circuits of Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to timers for ignition circuits for internal combustion engines. The object of, the invention is to provide a common instrumentality which may be in terposed between a source of direct current spark producing elements and both draw a high tension for the ignition circuit from the source of direct current and at the same time provide means whereby the timing of the explosions may be adjusted.
With this object in view my invention is embodied in preferable form in the construction and arrangement hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The drawing is a side view in elevation, partly diagrammatic of a dynamo electric machine and spark creating elements as shown in my invention applied thereto.
Referring to the drawln 1 indicates the shaft of a dynamo e ectric machine which may be either a generator or a motor, and 2, indicates the commutator thereof against which bears the direct current commutator brush 3. Carried on the shaft and revolving with the commutator is a contact carrying element consisting of a ring of nonconducting material, carrying a timing segment 5 which is connected by a connector 6 with one segment of the commutator. The ring 4 and the timing segment 5 carried on the ring are relatively adjustable circumferentially to change the timing of the ignition spark by means of set screw 7. Adapted to bear on the surface of the ring of insulating material and to contact incidentally with the timing segment carried there- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. *7, 1920. 1913. Serial No. 227,068.
by is a collecting brush 8. The brushes 8 and 3 are in circuit with a vibrator coil 9 and a spark plug 10.
In the revolution of the commutator the insulated segment carrying ring will revolve with the commutator and the contact segment will be carried under the collecting brush 8, thus not only drawing current for the high tension ignition circuit directly from the direct current commutator, but also directly establishing the ignition circuit through the spark plug.
This arrangement dispenses with the necessity for the use of a separate magneto and timer customarily employed, or other means of special character for producing a high tension current.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a dynamo electric machine, a commutator therefor, a member revolving with the commutator and carrying a brush contact, said contact having connection with a segment of the commutator, a collecting brush adapted to bear on said revolving member, an ignition circuit and means for adjusting said brush contact circumferentially of said member to change the timing.
2. In combination with a dynamo-electric machine, a commutator therefor, an insulating member carrying a brush contact, said contact having connection with a segment of said commutator, and means for adjusting t-he'position of the said insulating member circumferentially of said commutator to change the timing.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis this 23rd day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and eighteen.
