Abstract

9938. Muchka, J. May 7. Liquids and gases or vapours, separating.-Means are provided for varying the capacity of a separator and thereby regulating the velocity of the steam or keeping within predetermined limits the relation between the velocity and the separating-surfaces. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the inlet side of the separator is fitted with hinged plates d, which can be adjusted to cut out of action more or less of the corrugated plates b. Inclined ribs w on the plates d distribute the steam uniformly over the entire height of the separator. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the plates b are spaced apart by spiral springs f and mounted between side plates g, which can be adjusted by screwed spindles h to vary the distance between the plates b. Spring-pressed plates i prevent the steam from passing behind the plates g. Blade springs may replace the spiral springs. In a further modification, the separating-surfaces are arranged in sections which can be made individually operative or inoperative. The corrugated plates b are polished or made as smooth as possible on the sides facing the current of steam, while the remote sides are roughened. In addition, the roughened parts may be made with a channel, as shown at z, Fig. 8. Collecting-chambers are formed in the bottom of the separator for the deposited substances. To prevent particles of liquid which have already been deposited on the walls from passing into the outlet pipe, projecting ribs m are provided, as shown.
