Abstract
9519. McLean, A. May 2. Baskets.-In order to prevent the bottoms of quarter-cran herring baskets, and other baskets used in the fishing industry, from yielding and thereby containing an incorrect quantity of fish, they are made of perforated galvanized steel or iron strengthened by means of wooden bars, and the willow and cane bodies of the baskets are made from the bottom upwards. The bottom has perforations e, Fig. 1, and wooden fillets c, between which are inserted double cane stakes a and willow stakes b. The fillets are riveted between a galvanized steel or iron plate g, Fig. 2, and the bottom. One long and two short wooden strengthening-bars F are riveted to the bottom by means of the plate g and a cross-washer h. The basket has two branding sticks L, Fig. 3, to receive the official brand, bye sticks n, hoop sticks m, and cane handles.
