8203. Brown, G. W. April 13. Shafts and shafting.-To prevent pitting and corrosion of the propeller shafts of marine engines oil is supplied to the stern tube. An oil reservoir B, fitted with a charging-cock F and a gauge G, is connected at its upper and lower ends to the stern tube A by pipes C fitted with cocks D. Sea water which leaks past the bearing into the tube A runs to the lower part of the vessel B, and displaces oil which rises into the tube A by the upper pipe. The water is drawn off at intervals by a cock E.
