Abstract

5997. Incandescent Heat Co., and Smallwood, A. March 18. Steam-generator furnaces; smoke-consuming.-A fire-brick arch is fitted in the internal flue of a Cornish or like boiler, forming two passages through which the combustion products pass in the same direction. As shown, the arch A, which is supported on brackets or in any other suitable manner, divides the flue b into a large combustion chamber a<2> and a shallow jacket flue b<1>. The latter is preferably closed at the furnace end, the arch being perforated to allow the products of combustion to pass from the chamber a' to the jacket flue. The internal flue is preferably connected directly with the bottom flue, in which a fire-brick arch of similar construction to that described may be arranged. When applied to a Lancashire boiler, a single furnace may be used, and in this case the second flue is divided, as shown, by a partition a<4> forming two passages, through one of which the products of combustion travel to the front of the boiler, returning through the other. The arch A may be lined externally with metal, and the Galloway tubes &c. are cased with fire-brick. Observation tubes are provided, which may also be used for introducing into the combustion chamber a regulable quantity of air.
