Speed indicators.-In a centrifugal instrument applicable to cycles, motor-cars, &c., a spider j containing balls k between its arms is rotated by the vehicle and thus causes the balls to ascend the sloping surface of a dished supporting-plate d. The disk l, resting upon the balls, rises and falls in accordance with their movements and is connected by means of a spindle m, rack n, and pinion q, with the arbor r of the index hand. The spindle is attached to a spring plate o bearing upon a fixed plate t<1>, and the arbor is fitted with a spiral spring s for controlling the lower readings and to take up back-lash, and also with a spring s<1> for damping the oscillations of the pointer. To enable the scale to be uniformly graduated, the spring plate o may be formed with tapering limbs, as shown in Fig. 5, an increasing resistance being thus offered by the broader portions of the limbs as the disk l rises. A similar result is obtained by using a spring plate cut into sets of variously-sized sectors o<1>, o<2>, o<3>, Fig. 4. The supporting plate d is either free with regard to rotation independently of the spider j, or it may be given a positive periodic rotation, so that the balls shall not always ascend along the same paths.
