Abstract

5346. Davenport, C. March 10. Rope grips for use in attaching wagons, tubs, &c. to travelling wire ropes are constructed of two jointed sections having wedge-like surfaces adapted to be engaged by a metal loop attached to the load. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the clip, and'Fig. 4 is a plan view. The two steel or other metallic castings a, b are hinged above the rope A by a pin d. On the lower side of the casting a, an undercut wedgeshaped surface e is formed, and on the other casting b a rounded extension f is provided, being bored at an angle corresponding to the wedge e. A metal binding-loop H has one member h<2> rounded so as to fit the bole in the boss f, the other member h<1> being of rectangular cross-section and fitting the wedge surface e. The rear or wider end of the loop is bored to receive a swivel hook for attaching the load, the resistance of which causes the loop to be drawn backwards and forces the clip sections a, b into engagement with the rope A. The clip is disengaged by forcing the loop H forwards, or by swinging it about the circular member h<2>, this being effected either by a lever bar or by a blow. The forward end of the clip may be provided with ridges g to facilitate its passage around guidepulleys. An automatic disengaging-gear is shown in elevation in Fig. 5. As the clip approaches the point at which it is to be disengaged, it strikes a pair of levers k arranged one on each side of the bauling-rope. These levers are pivotally mounted on a bracket m, and their upper ends are connected by a link l to a pair of hammer-levers i, which strike the back of the clip and release it.
