4882. Downes, G. Aug. 21. Woodwork, ornamental.-Non-metallic bedsteads, cabinets, chairs, couches, &c. are ornamented by means of bands of metal passed by endways motion or sprung into grooves having flanged edges, said grooves being formed with cross-sections corresponding to the sections of the ornamental metal strips, or to the backing strips which are applied to the metal strips in certain instances. In the form shown in Fig. 2, an ornamental metal strip b<1> is employed to ornament a rail a<1>, in which are formed undercut grooves c, with which the edges of the strip b<1> engage. The metal strip, and the portion of the bar to which it is applied, may be plane, and the grooves may also be of dovetail form, as shown in Fig. 7. In other modifications, the ornamenting strip may be flush with the surface of the bar to be ornamented the grooves consisting of a pair of longitudinal saw-cuts e, Fig. 9. In further modifications, the grooves may be formed by securing strips f<1> to a barf, and the ornamental strip may be provided with a backing f<2>, Fig. 11. The ornamental strips may be applied to bars of various cross-sectional forms.
