Abstract

4625. Cockburn, R. Feb. 29. Lift valves.-Emergency stop valves of the type described in Specification No. 23,953, A.D. 1905, are normally operated by a screwed spindle, but are so arranged that, when the valve is disconnected from the screw-threaded operating-sleeve A, it is operated by the seam pressure acting on a piston A' adapted to work in a liner B, which is attached to the valve cover C by a flange b in such a manner as to be capable of free expansion. Tho movement of the piston is controlled by means of a slide valve E operated by a lever pivoted at g, which under normal conditions admits steam to the top of the piston by way of a port d<1>. When in use as a quick-closing valve and it is desired to close the valve, the 'slide valve is 'raised so as to connect the top of the piston to the exhaust by way of a port d<2>, whereupon the steam pressure acting on the underside of the piston closes the valve.
