Rollers and drums.-The end bushes which are secured to the gudgeons and in the tubes of rolls and the like, particularly paper-making rolls, are rendered elastic by the provision of a series of borings d, which may be at different distances and in two or more rings, or, as shown, equidistant from the bush periphery. The borings are formed with longitudinal radial slots, alternately inside and outside, as shown at e,f. The bushes may be solid, or in skeleton form with solid ends joined by webs and a central tube. The gudgeon c is prevented from rotating in the bush by a key or feather c<2> and notch, and is shouldered to fit against the bush. The bush has a conical bore to receive a conical sleeve h, preferably split, which is moved to grip the gudgeon and bush by a nut i screwed on the threaded end of the gudgeon. To remove the gudgeon, the outer end of the sleeve is threaded to receive a nut, the end of the bush being preferably recessed to accommodate this part of the sleeve. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the sleeve and gudgeon are formed in one piece, and the coning is in the opposite direction. To free the gudgeon, the nut i is run back and the gudgeon is struck inwards. This conical boss may be threaded to engage a similar position of the bore of the bush. According to the Provisional Specification, the bush may have radial slots only.
