Dyes, artificial.-Thioindigo dyes are obtained by the oxidation in alkaline solution of o-thioacetophenones of the general formula or their alkyl, alkyloxy, halogen, or like derivatives. The oxidation is preferably effected by passing air into the alkaline solution, but other agents, such as potassium ferricyanide, persulphates, perborates, or percarbonates, may be used. Heating the parent materials with sulphur and sodium sulphide yields leuco derivatives of the dyes. o-Thioacetophenones.-The above parent materials are obtained from o-diazoacetophenones by the usual methods. They oxidize on exposure to air, giving dithio bodies of the general formula
