Abstract

4487. Hill, A., and Lane, H. March 26. Overwinding, preventing.-A mine cage used in collieries or in inclined shafts is attached to the hoisting-cable through the medium of a pair of side plates between which is mounted automatic detaching-mechanism, the side plates being supported after detachment from the cable by means of horizontal sliding bolts mounted in a framing fixed above the shaft. Figs. 6 and 7 show the detaching- device, and Fig. 3 shows one of the supporting- bolts. The hoisting-cable is attached to a loop 9 which is mounted between side plates 3 from which the cage is suspended. The shackle bolt 10, which is normally enclosed by the lop 9, is in two parts each hinged to a side plate 3 and kept in position by pivoted levers 11, which are locked in the closed position by slide bolts 13. Notches on the underside of these bolts are engaged by teeth on levers 15, which are adapted to slide the bolts to and fro. Normally, the bolts are locked by tumblers 16. When the cage rises too high in the shaft, the plates 3 are guided into flared openings 8 in a fixed framework 6. Removable bolts 19 rigidly mounted in this framework engage the tumblers 16 and levers 15 so as to withdraw the bJlts 13 and release the hoisting-cable. On the framework 6 are pivotally mounted bell-crank levers 26, which are weighted on their horizontal arms, and have their vertical arms coupled by a pin-and-slot connexion to horizontal bolts 25. When the side plates 3 rise in the recesses of the framework 6, they disengage locking-catches 28, thus allowing the levers 26 to slide the bolts 25 under the plates 3 so as to support the cage. Four bolts 25 are arranged at each side of the cage, and some of these bolts may be placed at a lower level. To replace the mechanism after an overwind, the levers 15 are turned by spanners so as to re-attach the hoisting-cable, and the bolts 19 are then removed and the cage is lifted off the supports 25. These are then withdrawn so as to allow the cage to be lowered.
