Abstract

3879. Rivierre, L. C. G. Feb. 20, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Motor road vehicles.-In a variable-speed transmission device, applicable to motor road vehicles &c., the shaft 2 is driven through a ratchet &c. device by a lever 8 forming one side of a pivotally jointed quadrilateral 7, 8, 9, 10, adjustably constrained by a radius rod 13, and oscillated by means of a connecting-rod 5 and crank-shaft 1. The radius rod 13 is pivoted at 14 to a sleeve 15 movable by means of a fork &c. upon a rod 16 radially arranged with reference to the shaft 2. In its outer extreme position the pivot 14 coincides with the pivotal joint 11, the links 9, 13 being equal, and no motion is transmitted to the arm 8 or shaft 2. As the pivot 14 is moved nearer the shaft 2, the oscillation of the arm 8 increases until it is nearly equal to that of the arm 7. Three or more sets of the apparatus may be actuated by cranks or an eccentric on the driving-shaft, the motion being transmitted by toothed wheels to a central toothed wheel.
