Beit known that I, HANS SATTLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of /Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Variable# Speed Gear; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple, economical, and eiiicient variablespeed gear especially designed for motorvehicles; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
Figure l of the drawings represents a sectional view of the greater part of my variable-speed gear; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, having parts thereof broken away and in section; Fig. 3, a view in elevation illustrating the interior of a drum constituting part of the mechanism, and Fig. 4 a detail horizontal section indicated by line 4 4 in the second figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicatesadrive-shafton whichafriction-wheel B is made fast. Loose on the drive-shaft is another friction-wheel C of the same diameter as the one aforesaid. The loose wheel C has an elongated hub that terminates in a spur-pinion D, meshed with a spur-wheel E, that turns on a spindle ZJ, carried by a drum F, loose on a cylindrical portion of said hub. Clutch-shoes c, opposing the inner face of the rim of friction-wheel C, are connected by links d with lugs e of a sleeve G, in spline connection with the drive-shaft and controlled by a spanner f, in union with a rockshaft H, having a handlever I rigid therewith, said shaft being arranged to turn in a bearing g, constituting a depending portion of a bracket J, fast on a rail K, constituting a stationary part of the motor vehicle or machine to which my invention is applicable. An upwardly-projecting part h of -bracket J serves as a guide for an angular block t', in which a spindle j has its bearing, and loose on this spindle is a friction-pinion L, intermediate of the friction-wheels B C above specified. The opposing faces of the wheels and pinion are beveled, and said pinion is normally out of touch with said Wheels. The outer portion of block is annularlygrooved, and one end of a Spanner 7c, in pivotal connection with a lug of the aforesaid bracket, engages the groove, the other end of the Spanner being joined by a link m with a lever convenient to an operator, but not herein shown.
The hub of spurgear-wheel E is elongated and terminates in a pinion M, that meshes with another spur-wheel N, fast on the elongated hub of a shell P, loose on the driveshaft, an outer sprocket-wheel Q being integral or otherwise rigid with the shell.
A head F' of drum F is held in place by screws 'n engaging inner drum-lugs 10; and this head is loose on the hub of shell P, but clutch-dogs R, in pivotal connection with the drumhead-hub, are normally heldin impingement against the inner face of the shell-rim by the expansive force of springs q, arranged on pivots r in recesses of said drumhead. Pins s extend inward from the clutch-dogs, and opposed to the pins are noses of a series of segmental levers S, in pivotal connection with the drumhead F', between it and shell P aforesaid. Fixed on the rail K is another bracket T, and journaled in arms ofA this bracket is a rocker U, having an arm U', c'onnected by a link u, with a lever convenient to au operator, but not herein shown. Fast to the bracket T is one end of a drum-encircling brake-band V, and the other end of this band is in bolt-and-nut connection with the rocker U aforesaid. In pivotal connection with an arm of bracket T is a pair of bell-cranks o, each of which has an extremity thereof in union with a band WV, that impinges the segmental levers S, above specified, the other extremities of these cranks being tapered and arranged in the oppositely-tapered bore of a block X, in pivotal suspension from an arm Y, fast on ajournal of the rocker above specified.
In case the shoes c be out of clutch-contact with the friction-wheel C and the frictionpinion L retracted the drive-shaft will run idle; but, assuming that the bands V W are tightened by an operation of arm U and mechanism in conjunction therewith to hold drum'F and retract clutch-dogs R while said IOO shoes are in clutch with said friction-Wheel, the shell P, with the sprocket-wheel or an equivalent power-transmitting device, Will be run at slow speed by means of the train of the spur-gear connecting the hub of the aforesaid friction-Wheel with that of said shell. The aforesaid bands being slackened and said clutch-dogs thrown into contact with the friction-wheel C,the sprocket-wheel or its equivalent will be run at full speed of the driveshaft.
'lo reverse motion of the drive-shaft running in normal direction, the friction-pinion L is thrown into contact with the frictionwheels B C after lretraction of clutch-dogs c from the latter of said wheels.
While I have shown friction-Wheels B C and friction-pinion L, it may be preferable in someinstances to substitute correspondinglyarranged toothed wheels and pinion. If the variable-speed gear is only required to run in one direction, wheel B and pinion L may be omitted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A variable-speed gear comprising a wheel and shell loose on a drive-shaft, means for clutching the Wheel and shaft, a drum loose on hubs of the wheel and shell, a spur-pinion rigid with the wheel-hub, a spur-wheel rigid with the shell-hub, a combined spur wheel and pinion mounted in the drum to be in train with the spur-pinion and spur-wheel aforesaid, a power-transmitting device rigid with the shell, clutch mechanism in conjunction with the shell and drum, and means for simultaneously holding said drum and releasing the latter clutch mechanism.
2. A variable-speed gear comprising a wheel and shell loose on a drive-shaft, means for clutching the-wheel and shaft, a drum loose on hubs of the wheel and shell, a spur-pinion rigid With the Wheel-hub, a spur-wheel rigid with the shell-hub, a combined spur wheel and pinion mounted in the drum to be in train` with the spur pinion and wheel aforesaid, a power-transmitting device rigid with the shell, spring-controlled clutch-dogs in connection with a drumhead and opposed to the inner face of the aforesaid shell, segmental levers having pivotal connection with said d rumhead and in opposition to clutch-dog projections,
friction-bands encircling the aforesaid drum and levers, and a rocker in connectionwith the bands to actuate the same.`
3. A variable-speed gear comprising, a pair of gear-Wheels respectively fast and loose on a drive-shaft, a pinion and means for throwing the same in and out of working position with respect to said wheels, means for clutching the loose Wheel and drive-shaft, a shell loose on Said shaft, a drum loose on hubs of said loose Wheel and shell, a spur-pinion rigid with the loose-Wheel hub, a combined spur wheel and pinion mounted in the drum to be in train with the spur-pinion and spur-Wheel aforesaid, a power-transmitting device rigid With the shell,.clutch mechanism in conjunction with the shell and drum, and means for simultaneously holding the drum and releasing the latter clutch mechanism.
