Milling.-In a machine for chamfering the teeth of gear-wheels to facilitate the sliding of the wheels into mesh, the wheel 4 is rotated and reciprocated past a fixed rotating cutter 5, as shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8. The wheel to be chamfered is mounted on a spindle 3 mounted in a sliding block 15 reciprocated by a cam 27, which is removably attached to a wheel 21 driven by toothed gearing from the main shaft 25 of the machine. When the upper surface of the teeth are being chamfered, a roller 19 engaging the cam is mounted on the upper pin 18<1> of the block 15, and when the lower surface is being operated upon, it is mounted on the lower pin 18. The wheel is rotated by means of a worm 9 engaging its teeth, the worm being mounted on a slide 6 and driven by change gearing from the main shaft. This machine may be an attachment to an ordinary milling-machine, and in a modification, the work spindle is arranged horizontally instead of vertically, and in this case the attachment may swivel on its base and thus set the work at varying angles to the tool. The spindle 3 is capable of adjustment and renewal, and a guide gib 40 takes up wear of the sliding block 15. To avoid back-lash in the worm, one bearing of the spindle 8, Fig. 3, is provided with an adjustable locking-sleeve 33, having a washer 34 attached thereto, as shown.
