Abstract
1972. Earlam, J. Jan. 28. Brakes. - Tip - carts &c., having band brakes which act on the wheel hubs when the vehicle tilts, are tipped by means of toggle-levers actuated by right and left handed screws on a cross-shaft, means for disconnecting the tipping-mechanism and means for holding the brakes in various positions being provided. The cross-shaft d is mounted beneath the shafts b and is provided with a handle e and hand-wheel f, or with pinions gearing with larger wheels mounted on stub axles on the shafts b so as to get a quick rotation. Collars k travelling on the rod d are connected by toggles j to a shackle h, which fits into an open bracket g on the front of the cart so that the cart may be instantaneously tipped by withdrawing a pin i and removing the shackle h. The brakes are connected by levers l to links m passing through guides n, the lower ends of the links each having a series of holes o adapted to receive arms p projecting from a sliding bar q mounted beneath the shafts. A pin or other device may be employed to prevent the bar q from slipping. The weight on the horse's back can be adjusted by leaving the cart tilted at various angles.
