Abstract

Saws, sharpening and setting.-In a machine for filing and setting saws, the saw blade is held between a rest 7 and a pivoted clamp 9, which is automatically withdrawn from the blade to permit the feed by a cam-operated lever 17 connected to a rod 16 embracing an extension from the clamp, and returned by a spring. The feed of the saw is produced by a lip carried by a lever 58 operated by a cam 59, the cams being outwardly adjustable by setscrews or replaced by cams of different thickness according to the pitch of the teeth. The teeth are projected the desired amount by slotted stops 11, 12 fixed by screws to the rest 7. The file 31 is clamped in a holder 30 pivoted at 28 to a slide 25 moving in guides 26, which carry a grooved plate 34 engaging with a finger 36 connected to the file-holder for withdrawing the file in the inoperative stroke. The finger, Fig. 4, is deflected into the groove 35 by a lip 37 and has inclined shoulders 40, 41, 42 to ensure the movement of the file to its correct positions. The shaft 5, which is hand or power driven and operates the clamping, feeding, and reciprocating mechanism also through gearing 53, 51 and a jointed bar 50, operates a notched saw-setter eitherby means of pivoted pawls 48 engaging recesses in the setter or by allowing the latter to come in contact with the ends of a slot in the bar 50.
