Abstract
1448. Wegmann, E. Benz-. Jan. 21. Baling-presses.-In a machine for compressing chaff into bales, a tube b, Fig 1, is fitted with a movable bottom c fixed to slides d provided with balance weights i. The chaff is placed in the tube b, and a piston k attached to a screw l is forced down until two spring bolts f engage notches in the slides d. The piston k is then raised, carrying with it the slides d and bottom c. The compressed chaff is thus held under compression between the piston k and the bottom c and is drawn upwards out of the tube b. It may then be bound and released from the press. Two such presses may be operated in conjunction with one another, as shown. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the chaff is placed in a tube b and is compressed by a piston c against an upper piston x. When the compression is sufficient, the piston x is automatically drawn upwards in unison with the piston c, and the bale is thus pushed clear of the tube b, as shown on the right of Fig. 3. It can then be bound up as usual. ...
