Abstract
1375. Staal, G. Jan. 21. Movable-abutment type, having hinged or rocking abutments. A piston B rotates in an annular chamber and co-operates with one or other of the hinged abutments A, AA, according to the direction of rotation. The abutments are mounted on one shaft, and the one not in use is held up by the engagement of a key on the shaft with the end of a slot in the hub. These slots are of sufficient length to permit the e movement of the abutment which is lowered into working position. The abutments work in chambers, which may be connected to a vacuum or the steam supply as required to assist the working of the abutments. Admission valves are provided on opposite sides of the engine for running in opposite directions. The forward valve V is shown in Fig. 3. It is operated by a cam P, which strikes a tappet lever ZZ, sliding upon a pivot block and connected to the valve-rod. To reverse the engine, a lever Q is moved over, either by hand or by engine gear, to change the positions of the abutments, and by means of screw gear RE, the tappet lever ZZ is moved over its pivot block out of the path of the cam, and the corresponding lever of the reverse valve is moved into gear by means of the rod Z. The valves are opened at starting by starting-levers S.
