Abstract

7 3 1. S w a n, Hunter, & Wigham Richardson, [Schlick, E. O.]. Jan. 11. Gyroscopic apparatus.-Comprises means for automatically regulating the braking effect on gyroscopic apparatus used for minimizing the oscillation of ships or other bodies, in accordance with the force of the waves. Three methods are described, in which the strength of the braking is influenced, (a) by the amplitude of the oscillation, (b) by the angular velocity attained by the oscillations, and (c) by the couple produced by the apparatus. Fig. 1 shows a form of device for automatically braking the apparatus in accordance with the amplitude of the oscillations. The trunnion a of the apparatus is provided with levers a', a<2> connected to pistons c' in cylinders d, d<1> containing a liquid and in communication with one another by way of a passage d<2> regulated by a valve d<3>. This valve is automatically operated from a rod e by a lever k, and may be adjusted by a handwheel f<1>. The length of the rod e is adjustable by a hand-wheel e'. Movement of the levers a', a<2> causes a flow of liquid in the passage d, and also moves the valve d<3> by means of a lever g, and a pin g<5>, by which the rod e is moved against the action of a spring h<3> in a cylinder h<1>. Valves h<2>, j' are fitted in this cylinder to regulate the rate of flow of the liquid between a tank j and the cylinder h<1>. The spring h<3> restores the valve d<3> to its normal position. Fig. 3 shows a device for braking automatically in accordance with the angular velocity of the oscillations. The lever a<2> mounted on the trunnion a is in the form of a toothed sector, and operates a pinion b, which is in one with a cylindrical sleeve b<2> containing ratchets b<3> engaging with the wheel c<2>. Mounted upon the same shaft as the wheel c' is a fly-wheel c<1>, the rotation of which effects a braking action upon the apparatus in accordance with the angular velocity. In the arrangement for braking in accordance with the couple produced by the apparatus, the trunnion bearings are mounted on springs, and relative movement between the bearings and supports brings into operation a brake attached directly to the frame of the apparatus.
