Abstract

313. Kampfe, O. Jan. 6. Shears for trimming hedges, lawns, &c. are provided with a removable device which moves over the surface supporting the shears during the cutting operation. The bow member a<2>, b<2>, Figs. 1 and 2, of the shears is divided and pivoted at e to an extension c of an inclined bar c', the extension c carrying a handle d by which the shears are held. The inclined bar c<1> has a transverse piece c', to which is fixed a blade a of the shears, the other blade b being movable. The blades a, b are kept apart by a spring 4 attached to the bar c<1>. A barf, pivoted at 5 to the shank a' of the blade a and passing through a slot in the shank b<1> of the blade b, is pivoted at 6 to a triangular piece f<1>, which is fixed to the handle f and carries a roller 7 bearing on the outer convex surface of the shank b<1>. By actuating the handle f the blades a, b are forced together by the roller 7. For cutting grass, the supporting-device consists of a roller g, Fig. 3, carried by a yoke g<1> having pairs of lugs 8, which engage opposite sides of the bar c<1>, the yoke being held in any desired position on the bar by a spring 10, the free ends of which engage a longitudinal groove in the bar. The position of the yoke on the bar c' determines the height of the grass cut. For trimming hedges, the supporting-device consists of a metal plate h, Fig. 7, adjustably connected to the bar c<1> by the standard h<1> and screw 11. As shown, the plate h is in the same plane as the blades, being notched to receive the end of the bar c<1> ; but the plate may be made so as to be below the plane of the blades. A hook is provided on the bow b<2>, to engage the handle f and hold it in the closed position for packing.
