Abstract

28,411. De Fries et Cie. April 19, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Forging.-In a forging-machine of the type in which the matrix is opened and closed by the action of the hammer slide operating through a toggle-lever, the lever which transmits the movement of the slide to the toggle has a curved surface engaging a projection on the hammer slide. In the first part A to B of the forward stroke of the hammer, the roller or projection c on the slide is in the curved notch G of the lever d, which is pivoted at D and is connected by a rod o to a toggle-lever g, h, which turns on a fixed pivot p and actuates the movable jaw n of the matrix. During this time, the roller turns the lever into the position shown and closes the jaw n. During the upsetting-operation from B to C, the roller runs on the surface E, F. By suitably shaping the curve, the matrix may be closed at any desired period of the stroke. The jaw n is not opened on the return stroke of the hammer until after the portion B to C of the stroke has been completed, so that the adhesion of the hammer to the work is prevented. The lever d is moved back when the roller engages the notch G. In order that no lateral pressure may be transmitted to the slide by the reaction of the pressure on the matrix, the centre of the hinge H of the toggle passes a small distance i beyond the plane passing through the axes of the pivot and the pin attached to the jaw n, the pressure that the hinge has to sustain in consequence being taken up by a projection on the framing.
