Abstract

28,352. Ridley, E. S. Dec. 24. Differential gearing.-Fig. 1 shows a section through the right-hand wheel and gear, the gearing in the other wheel being the same. The rear axle A consists of a single shaft, on the ends of which the hubs of the driving-wheels are loosely mounted. The axle is driven from the longitudinal driving- shaft by a central bevel-wheel B, which is keyed to it. Pinions F keyed one at each end of the shaft A, mesh with two or more planetary pinions G, loosely mounted on pins H carried by the hubs of the wheels. The pinions G also mesh with internal teeth on loose gear-rings H<1>. The gear-ring on the right-hand side is of sufficient breadth to mesh also with a pinion I on the end of the differential shaft E, shown also in Fig, 3, while the gear-ring on the left-hand side meshes similarly with a pinion I<2>, which is connected to the shaft E by gearing I, I<1>. In a modification, the loose gear-ring is fitted with external teeth to engage the pinions on the differential shaft E.
