Cooling ; heating ; refrigerator cars.-In a system of refrigeration for railway vehicles &c., in which air from a closed chamber is compressed, cooled in a refrigerator n, and caused to do work in an expansion apparatus p, the water in the refrigerator is circulated through a radiator t outside the vehicle by means of a pump w which may be driven from the car axle. The shaft d, which drives the compressor and is connected to the piston in the expansion cylinder, is driven from the car axle. The speed of the shaft d is rendered independent of that of the carriage by any means, such as a centrifugal governor which, according to the speed of the shaft, acts so as to expand or contract the belt pulley through which the shaft d is driven. A valve x, arranged in the pipe r leading from the expansion apparatus, is controlled thermostatically so as to allow cold air to pass by the pipe y into accumulator water tanks as soon as the temperature of the car falls below the desired limit. A threeway cock z allows warm air to pass from the compressor into the car without passing through the refrigerator, so as to heat the car. The shaft d may be driven by a cardan shaft consisting of two parts 2, 3, sliding one within the other and kept apart by a spring. A tension device for the belt consists of two pivoted frames 4, carrying rollers 6 which are drawn together by a spring 8.
