Abstract

27,512. Ashberry, P., and Ward, D. Dec. 13. Making chisels.-Solid or weldless socket chisels and other like tools having sockets are made from round pieces of steel. The piece has one end bored out, Fig. 2, and after heating is placed vertically in a die or gripping-device to produce the desired form so that the drift, Fig. 3, may be forced into the hole to expand it to the desired diameter. It is then placed in horizontallyheld pressing-tools so as to complete the outer shape of the socket and shoulder, the compression at the same time releasing the drift. Finally the blade of the chisel is drawn out to the required width and thickness from the opposite end of the steel, Fig. 5. The complete forging is accomplished at one heat.
