Abstract

27,114. Martin, S. J. Dec. 7. Winding-machines.- Cop-winding machines are provided with an apparatus by which broken ends may be safely and rapidly tied together. The apparatus comprises a pair of nippers e, e' mounted in a carriage D which can slide on a frame C. The nippers are provided with a spiral surface e<20>, e<5>, and the movable jaw is normally held in the raised position by a spring lever h<1>. When the carriage D is moved by hand along the frame C, the nippers are rotated by the engagement of a pinion E' on the nipper with a rack c on the frame. To tie two ends t together, the ends are stretched across the nippers at the level e<20> between a stud D<1> and a notched projection D' on the carriage and over a "loop-forming " wire " F, as shown in Fig. 6. When the carriage is moved along the frame, the nippers are rotated so as to form the threads into a loop in the manner shown in Figs. 6<a> and 6b. As the carriage approaches the end of its traverse, the pinion E' leaves the rack c, thereby stopping the rotation of the nippers, the movable jaw e<1> is closed by reason of the engagement of the lever h<1> with a spring stop I, and the loose ends of thread are cut off close to the point y at which they are gripped by a cutter G. The k n o t is then completely formed by raising the left-hand portions of the threads t so as to swing the loop over gripped portions of the threads, and drawing them tight as shown in Fig. 6<c>. The apparatus is mounted on a travelling frame B so that it may be moved along the winding-machine into any position desired.
