Abstract

26,412. Bowron, G. Nov. 29. Optical pointers.-The vibrations of sonorous or resonant bodies are demonstrated by means of a pivoted mirror operated by a crank and rigid connecting-rod or by stretched wires. Applied to a phonograph, a mirror a, Fig. 2, mounted in pivots b in a frame h is provided with a crank c, which is connected by a link d to the stylus bar e resting against the diaphragm f of the sound-box. A beam of light falls on the mirror and is reflected on to a screen in the usual way. The link d may be connected to a string of a violin or banjo, and it may terminate in a weight which rests on the edge of the vibrating body. In a modification, the link d is replaced by a stretched wire m, Fig. 4 ; to the centre of this wire is attached a wire o, wound around the spindle of the mirror and controlled by an adjustable spring p.
