Abstract

26,189. Meakin, Ltd., A., and Jackson, W. Nov. 26. Kilns.-A gas-fired kiln for drying or burning ceramic ware is provided with means for controlling the supply of gas and of air to each part of the kiln, and with special arrangements of air-heating flues in the floor of the kiln. In the circular form of up-draught kiln shown in Figs. 1 and 2, producer gas from an annular flue 1 passes to the bags 10 and to radial passages 11 through a flue 2 provided with a damper 4. Air for combustion enters dampered openings 5 and, after passing towards the centre through radial flues 7, returns through flues 9 and meets the gas from the flues 2. When applied to a down-draught kiln, the mixture of gas and air passes through the bags 10 only, and the waste gases escape through openings 13, Fig. 3, to radial passages leading to outlet flues 14 in the kiln walls. To effect a more regular distribution of the gas, it may be led to a central chamber 16, Fig. 5, from which it passes through radial flues 17 to meet air heated in radial passages arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The central gas chamber 16 may also be provided in a down-draught kiln, the air-inlet passages and waste-gas flues being arranged as shown in Fig. 3. In an oblong kiln, the flues are arranged parallel to each other instead of radiating to a common centre.
