Abstract

25,497. Honeywood, D., and Payne, G. Nov. 18. Hammers, power.-Relates to ore and like stamps in which the stamps m, Fig. 4, are carried by rods l having pistons k which are reciprocated in cylinders i by air compressed in cylinders a. The lower end of the cylinder i communicates by a port s with a valved chamber p at the bottom of the cylinder a, and the exhaust port t opens into the cylinder a a little below the middle of its length and opposite the port o, which is open to the atmosphere when the piston h approaches its highest and lowest positions. As the piston h ascends, air entering through the port o is compressed and passes by the port u into the annular space near the top of the piston k, escaping therefrom through the ports w and valve x into the top of the cylinder i. As soon as the upper end of the piston is clear of the port u, the piston is acted upon by the whole charge of compressed air and exhaust takes place from the lower side of the piston when the port t is uncovered by the piston h. On the descent of the piston h, the ports o, t are closed and the port 2 opened, the compressed air below the piston opening the valve r, in the chamber p and passing into the cylinder i. A relief valve z prevents the formation of a partial vacuum in the compressing-cylinder a. A valve or cock in the passage t and a cock at the top of the cylinder a allow the piston h to reciprocate without actuating the piston k, so that the latter is held in the raised position. The stamps are rotated by means of spur-wheels 11, 13, 14, Fig. 1, one of which is formed in one with a bevel-wheel 10 gearing with a wheel on a shaft driven by chain or bevel gearing from the driving- shaft d. The stamp heads may be of varying diameters and have flat, serrated, or concave bases and sides. The shaft d and the rods e, f which actuate the piston h are surrounded by a dust-excluding shield 18.
