Abstract
24,563. Heenan & Froude, and Leask, H. N. Nov. 6. Charging.-Refuse is fed to a destructor by rollers A, Fig. 2, arranged at the mouth of the hoppers H as shown in Fig. 7, each roller consisting of an outer feed-drum provided with holes to receive a series of prongs or fingers, some of which may be rigidly and others pivotally mounted on an inner eccentric drum or shaft D. The drum D, Fig. 2, is mounted upon eccentric sheaves C, and is provided with prongs d registering with holes a in the outer drum, through which they project, for part of a revolution, and engage the refuse. The outer drum is driven by worm and worm-wheel gearing, and the inner drum may be driven by the pressure of the ends of the holes a against some or all of the prongs d ; or the inner drum may be positively driven and the outer one may be driven by the pressure of the prongs on the ends of their holes ; or both rollers may be geared together. As a shown in Fig. 2, one row of prongs is rigidly fixed to the drum D. When all the prongs are rigidly fixed to the drum D, the openings in the outer drum are made sufficiently long to allow for the necessary play of the prongs. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, an eccentric shaft F replaces the inner drum, the prongs being provided with hubs through which the shaft F passes. The shaft may be fixed or it may be driven round in the same manner as the drum D, in which case one or more of the prongs are secured to the shaft. The edges of the hopper H, Fig. 7, serve to scrape the roller, but any suitable form of scraper may be used. The inner drnm D may form an oil bath, and air under pressure may be admitted to either or both drums to prevent any dust or other material from entering through the openings a. The rollers may be mounted in bearings having a spring device to allow them to yield should any bulky or irregular object get between them,
