T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. STEPHENS, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Huntsville, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Huller and Kraut- Gutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination machines, and has relation more particularly to a machine that may be used for householdpurposes.
It is the object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein means may be operated simultaneously for working a churn, a huller, and a kraut cutter.
Furthermore, it is an objectof the invention to provide a novel machine of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice, and economical to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and the novel arrangement and combined of parts to be hereinafter more fully described.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, and wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with a portion of the device removed, certain parts illustrated being slightly in section; Fig. 3 is a view illustrating a longitudinal section of the inven tion; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the device having portions thereof in section.
'In the drawings, 1, denotes a frame supported by the standards or uprights 2. Intermediate the uprights, and approximately centrally thereof, are the strips 3, connecting said uprights. The frame 1 is provided with a longitudinal strip 4, and the space between one of the longitudinal sides of the frame and the strip 4 is provided with a flooring 5, provided with the openings (3 and 7 the portions of the flooring between the openings and the ends of the frame are arranged on an incline, said incline being directed towards the openings, as is fully shown in Fig. 3.
Mounted in the sides of the frame, ex-
tending across the opening 7 and depending therethrough, is a kraut cutter S, which may be of any ordinary structure, but preferably as shown in the drawings. In the drawings, the kraut cutter shown is a roller having the end flanges 9 to which are extended the cutting blades 10 arranged on an incline. The cutting blades act in conjunction with the bottom of the inclined portion of the flooring between the opening 7 and the end of the frame, to produce the desired out. In' order to facilitate the cutting of the kraut, this lower end of the flooring is provided pith a metallic plate 11, as is shown in Adjacent the inner edge of the opening 7 is a shield 12 hinged to the flooring, as at 13. This shield extends partly around the kraut cutter, and prevents the promiscuous throw of the kraut as will at this moment be plainly understood.
Mounted within the opening 6 and supported by the sides of the frame, is a roller 14, provided with peripheral fingers 15, adapted to cooperate with the fingers 16 on the breasting 17, depending from the outer edge of the opening 6. Hinged adjacent the inner edge of the opening 6, is a shield 18 similar to the shield 12. This shield 18 extends partially around the roller 14. The roller 14 in conjunction with the breasting 17, is for the purpose of hnlling or shelling beans, peas, or the like.
\Vhile the rollers S and 1 1 have been described as being carried by or mounted in the sides of the frame, it is to be observed that in fact they are mounted in a side of the frame and the longitudinal strip 1, hereinbefore referred to.
Resting on the frame 1, and arranged entirely thereover, is a box 19, having the bottom 20 thereof positioned slightly above the lower edges of the walls of the box. The bottom 20 is provided with openings 21, there being an opening arranged above and slightly in advance of each of the rollers 8 and 14 Thus it can be seen that the box 19 serves as a feed hopper.
The materials forced through the openings 6 and 7 by their respective rollers fall upon the inclined chute 22, which is provided with the side walls 23. Although not shown, it may be stated that a suitable receptacle is placed below the lower end of the chute 22 for receiving the material discharged thereby.

Mountframe, beneath the shaft 26 and to one side thereof, is a shaft 28, havingfixedthereon a small pulley 29, around which passesv an endless belt 30;, which engages a; pulley 31,.
on the shaft 26; This shaft 28, extends beyond' the sideof the frame and said exterior portion is provided with means for rotating said shaft, said means being either the belt wheel 32, or the hand crank 33, as is shown in Fig. 2.
Fixed on the shaft 28, adjacent the side of the frame, is the master pulley wheel 34, which is provided with an endless beltv 35, engaging a pulley 36, on a shaft 37 carried by the frame. This shaft 37, in turn is provided with a pulley 38, around whichpasses a belt 39, engaging a pulley 40, on the shaft 41. It is on this shaft 41, that the roller 14 is secured. By this arrangement it is thought obvious how this roller 14 is rotated. Also fixed on the shaft 41, is a pulley 42, engaged by an endless belt 43, passing around a pulley 44, on the shaft 26, on which is secured the fan blades 25, before referred to. Also engaging the master pulley wheel 34, is an endless belt 45, which passes around a pulley 46, 011 the shaft 47, carried by the frame. This shaft 47, is provided with a second pulley, around which passes an endless belt 48,engaging a pulley 49, on the shaft 50. It is on this shaft 50,that the kraut roller is secured. It is now thought that it is obvious how the kraut roller is operated. Also on the shaft 50, is a pulley 51, around which passes an endless belt 52, engaging a pulley 53,. on the shaft 54, carried by the frame. This shaft 54, projectsbeyond one side of the frame, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Carried by one side ofthe frame adjacent an end thereof, are the spaced alining bearings 55, having the hinged caps 56. Mounted within the bearing blocks 55, and supported thereby, are the vertical parallel shafts 57, provided at their upper ends with the meshing gears- 58, which cause said shafts to rotate in opposite directions. Intermediate the length of one of the shafts 57, is. abevel gear 59which meshes with a similar gear 60, on the shaft The arrangement for rotating the shafts is believed to be fully understood from the foregoing. The lowerends of the parallel shafts extend within a churn body 61, and those portions of the shafts within the body are provided with the agitators 62. The churn body is provided with the hinged cover 63, inorder that the churn body may be readily applied or removed.
F rom, the-foregoing description, it will be seen that a simple device is provided, which will perform three functions, namely, that of cutting kraut or the like, shelling peas or the like and operating a churn.
Vhat I claim is:
In a. machine for treating vegetablemat-V the wall carrying a flooring, said flooring having. openings therein, a cylinder having material reducing members mounted upon its surfaces mounted in each of said open ings, shieldshingedly secured to the flooring adjacent the inner edges of the openings, said shields extending partly over the. cylinders and a box carried by the frame and extending thereover', said box having its bottom positioned slightly above the lower edges of the walls thereof and provided with openings slightly in advanced each cylinder whereby said box may be used as a hopper.
