Abstract

23,218. Potter, H. S., and Johnson, F. D. Oct. 21. [Cognate Application No. 3552, A.D. 1908, dated Feb. 17.] Rock drills. - To remove debris from bore-holes, an, ejector is connected to the main pressure-fluid supply or to the exhaust outlet from the rock-drill cylinder and also to a chamber surrounding the bore-hole or to passages in the drilling- bit. The ejector 3, Fig. 1, is connected to the drill cylinder 1 by a pipe 4, and to a chamber 6 surrounding the drill and bore-hole by a pipe 5. A rubber ring 11 on the base of the chamber 6 provides an air-tight joint when pressure is applied to the foot-lever 12, and a second rubber ring provides an air-tight joint between the drilling-bit and the chamber 6. Fig. 2 shows a modified form of chamber consisting of a funnel-shaped rubber chamber 15 with a casting 16 attached, the pipe 5 being connected to the. casting 16. The outlet from the ejector 3 is connected to a pail 10. The pail has a shoulder on which rests an inner conical part 30, which dips under water. Baffle-plates 31 are provided, and the pail has a porous cover 32. In operation, live or exhaust motive fluid or water is passed through the drill bit, and is drawn out by suction produced by the passage of motive fluid from the pipe 4 through the ejector 3. It then passes into the pail 10 and under water, where the. dust is collected, the air passing out through the cover. A furtber modification is shown in Fig. 5. The drill is provided with grooves 21 and surrounded by a sleeve 22. A rubber washer 24 provides a joint at the mouth of the bore hole, the washer being inflated by motive fluid from the main-supply or the exhaust. Dust is drawn through the grooves 21 and the pipe 5<a> to the dust receptacle. The pipe 5<a> may be used as a handle to rotate the drill.
