Abstract

21,565. Shaw, J. Sept. 28. Fixed-abutment type, with pistons having outwardly-sliding vanes. The engine is a compound steam-engine provided with an arrangement of reversing valves actuated by a single lever; modifications in the form of the chambers and the arrangement of the vanes are also described. A circular rotor 9 is arranged in a casing provided with three chambers 16, 17, 18, in which work vanes 12 sliding in slots 10 in the rotor. The slots 10 are arranged in opposite pairs, and the vanes sliding in opposite slots are connected by rods 13 passing through holes in the main shaft 4 of the machine. The chambers are of such form that the outer ends of a pair of vanes bear against the wall in all positions. In the casing are arranged tubular valves 20 ... 25. The cavity of the valve 20 commmunicates with a steam-pipe 36, and the valve is provided with ports 55, 55<x>, whereby it can be connected to the chamber 17 by passages 39, 40, 41 or passages 39<x>, 40<x>, 41<x>. The cavities of the valves 21, 22, 23, 25 are connected to the exhaust, and that of the valve 24 to a chamber 30 in the casing, which communicates by a port with a spiral groove 56 on the outside of the valve 20. When the valves are in the position shown, the steam enters the chamber 17 by the passages 39<x>, 40<x>, 41<x>, and after acting on the vanes passes by the ducts 42, 43, Fig. 8, channels 63, 67 on the outside of the valves 23, 25, and ducts 48, 50 to the chambers 16, 18. From these, after acting on the vanes therein, it passes by ducts 47 and ports 58 to the cavities of the valves 21, 23. Steam leaking past the vanes in the chamber 17 passes to the chamber 30, and thence by ports 60 in the valve 23 and ducts 53, 54 to the ducts 53, 54 to the ducts 42, 43. Steam leaking past the vanes in the chamber 16 passes by the duct 49 to the valve 23; and steam leaking past the vanes in the chamber 18 passes by the duct 51, Fig. 7, and grooves 68, 70 to the interior of the valve 25. The engine is reversed by turning all the valves at once. This is effected by a reversing-lever on the spindle of the valve 20, to which the others are connected by link-work.
