Abstract
21,237. Beardmore & Co., W., and Bremberg, A. Sept. 25. Sights and methods of sighting.- Relates to single-screw elevating and sighting gear of the kind described in Specification No. 7951, A.D. 1902, and consists in providing independent operating means at two points, and clutch devices preventing movement applied at one point from moving the gearing at the other point. Fig. 5 shows a sectional rear elevation of one form of elevating-gear, and Fig. 4 shows a corresponding view of the sighting-attachment. Pivotally mounted on the trail A of the gun is a block A', which carries a nut A<2> and also receives an externally and internally threaded s!eeve C, which engages with a second sleeve C<1> surrounding a spindle C<2> attached by means of a cross-head C<3> to the gun cradle D<2>. The gun can be elevated or depressed to bring the sight on the target by a hand-wheel B<4> which operates gearing B<3>, B. The gun and sights are moved simultaneously by means of a hand-wheel H, which operates through gearing D4, D3 to move the gun ; while by means of a worm E, worm-wheel E<1>, shaft E<2>, worm E<3>, Fig. 4, wormwheel G, and shaft G<1>, a pinion J<1> is operated, and engaging with a rack J<2> moves the sight. The two sets of gearing are so proportioned that the sight moves through the same angle as, but in the opposite direction to, the gun, and is thus kept on the target. The sight is levelled when the carriage is on uneven ground by means of a worm K<3>, and au arm K<4>, which serve to incline a guide K<1>, carrying the sight bar J<2>, and pivoted at K<2>, to the gun cradle. The teeth of the bar J<2> and pinion J<1> are formed as circular arcs struck from K<2> as centre so that correct gearing is assured. A special clutch H<1>, Fig. 5, of the kind described in Specification No. 20,194, A.D. 1903, prevents rotation of the shaft of the handle H when the handle B' is operated, and a similar clutch may be attached to the shaft of the handle B<4> in cases where friction is insufficient to prevent its rotation. The invention may be applied to elevating-gear in which the intermediate sleeve C is dispensed with.
