Field magnets.- The field - magnet poles of dynamos, motors, motorgenerators, &c. are excited, for example in the two-pole machine shown in Fig. V, by means of two coils, of which one 6 is of arched or U- shape and embraces one pole piece 5 only, while the other coil 7 is of ogee or S-shape and has its ends lying up against or close to different pole-pieces 5, 5<1>. The straight parts 8, 9 of the coils are arranged to lie parallel to, and as closely as possible over the armature coils undergoing commutation. The ends of the coils 6, 7 may be inclined to the straight parts 8, 9 instead of being perpendicular thereto. Among other advantages, sparking is prevented and cooling is facilitated. The two coils may be so connected as to constitute a single coil.
