Abstract

15,199. Thornton, J. E. July 2. Cameras. In a camera in which the focusing screen is examined by means of a mirror inside the camera, the observation opening in the top or side of the camera is made large enough to focus without approaching the eye inconveniently near to the camera. A piece of plain glass may be inserted, but preferably a lens E, Fig. 1, is used and a concave mirror F, whereby the reflected image is viewed on, or apparently on the lens from a convenient distance. Provision is made for covering the opening after focusing, and compensating for the distance between the sensitive plate and the focusing screen. The movable parts operate in succession after one is released so that the focal distance is adjusted and light excluded from the observation opening before the shutter is released. In one modification, the mirror F, Fig. 1, is released from the catch f<1>, and, in swinging upwards to close the opening e, adjusts the lens by the quadrant g<2> and releases the roller-blind shutter which has the focusing screen upon it. The quadrant g<1> simultaneously brings a smaller diaphragm in front of the lens. In another modification, the focusing screen is composed of two hinged flaps, and in turning one down to cover the mirror F, Fig. 2, the lens board is automatically moved backward by a rack slide g<5>. Alternatively, the carrier for the plate holder may be moved forwards. In another form of camera, the mirror F and " viewing screen " E, Fig. 12, are on an intermediate partition of the camera. The principle is applicable also for box cameras, which further may include roller-curtain arrangements for covering the opening and mirror. According to the Provisional Specification, different forms of roller-blind shutters may be used, in particular that described in Specification No. 17,358, A.D. 1906; also sliding covers may shield the opening and the mirror, and an auxiliary lens may be used for adjusting the focal distance.
