Abstract

15,014. Dawson, A. T., and Buckham, G. T. June 29. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to firing-mechanism of the type in which the striker is retracted, prior to the transverse motions of the lockframe, and consists in providing for this to be effected directly or indirectly from the crank pinion of the breech-actuating mechanism. When the breech is closed, the arrangement of parts is as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 which illustrate the application of the invention to a gun of small calibre. The box-slide B mounted on the carrier A carries a lock-frame C, provided with a guide-bolt C<2>, by which lateral motion is imparted to it from the pinion crank a<2> through a link E. During the first part of the motion of the crank a<2> in the clockwise direction, which opens the breech, the link E turns on the pin C' as pivot, and the projection e<1> pushes the rod D<1> and moves the lever D so as to retract the striker C<1>. The further motion of the crank a<2> causes the link E to move the guide-bolt C<2>, and with it the lock-frame C laterally to uncover the vent ; at the same time, the projection c<1> on the striker bears against the inclined ribs b<1> on the box-slide B, and by this means the retraction of the striker is completed. The retracting-rod D<1> is kept in position during the further motion of the crank by the surface e<2> bearing against the surface d'. Figs. 17 and 18 illustrate a modification suitable.for heavy guns. The crank a<2> in this case moves in the anticlockwise direction to open the breech, and has a pin e<7> which engages with a slot e<8> on one arm of a bell-crank lever E', the other arm of which is provided with a projection e<1> which pulls the rod D' to retract the striker ; it also has teeth e", which engage with a rack e<l2> on a block E<2>, and serve to move the lock-frame C laterally through the intervention of the link E and guide-pins C<3>, C<2>. Two other modifications suitable for heavy guns are described. The bell-crank lever is replaced in one of them by a system of levers, and in the other by a slotted cam-plate attached to the pinion a<2>.
