Abstract

14,811. Lock, W. H., and North, T. M. June 27. Delivery apparatus for printing - machines comprises an endless gripper chain 42 passing arouud sprockets 44, 45, and a semicircular guide 50 adjacent to which is a plate or series of guide-rods 51 for supporting the tail of the sheet 13 as this is conveyed from the impression cylinder to the delivery rollers 34, 35. The gripper 41 are of usual construction, and are opened by a stationary cam 52. The lower delivery roller 34 is stationary and consists of a number of disks on the shaft 36, which grip the sheet on its side or on its side and centre margins. The roller 35 is supported in open slot bearings 38, in which it is lifted at intervals by a cam on the shaft 36. From the rollers 34, 35, the sheet passes to a carriage 1 reciprocated on rails 3 by a lever 9 and link 8, located at one side only of the machine, leaving the other side free for the removal of the pile of sheets. In the carriage 1 is a roller 17 which supports the horizontal bight of a series of endless tapes 27 passing also around rollers 28, 29, 30, the latter of which is supported in bearings 31 sliding vertically on rods 33, and a sectional roller 21 supported in open slot bearings and adapted to be guided into and out of contact with the roller 17 by a loose roller 22 running on a track 24, 25 At the commencement of the outward travel of the carriage 1, the roller 21 is lifted clear of the roller 17, and the friction disk 23 thereon is in contact with the track 26, thus rotating the roller to advance the sheet being fed forward by the rolls 34, 35. As the forward motion continues, the roller 21 descends away from the track 26 and nips the sheet against the roller 17 ; both rollers 17, 21 remain stationary as the carriage conveys the sheet out over the table 4, while the roller 35 is lifted to allow the tail of the sheet freely to pass between it and the roller 34. During the return of the carriage, the roller 17 is driven to feed off the sheet by means of a pinion 15, engaging the rack 16 on the underside of the rails 3 and connected to the shaft 14 by a free-wheel clutch 18.
