Abstract
14,671. Hense, R. June 25. Mineral oil; turpentine substitutes; cleansing- compositions; fats and fatty oils.-Crude or putly refined mineral oils are treated with an oxidizing- agents, such as a nitro compound, in presence of a carbon compound, such as a gum or resin, to form a homogeneous mixture, and an oxygenated salt, such as dehydrated sodium or magnesium sulphate, and the product is fractionally distilled. In an example, mineral oil is mixed with resin and magnesium sulphate. The mixture h preferably washed with sulphuric acid, caustic soda, or potash and water. A solution of picric acid in benzol is added, and the mixture is fractionally distilled by direct steam. The first fraction is suitable as a combustible, particularly for use in internal-combustion engines ; the second as a solvent for use in cleaning dress goods and in the extraction of fat from bones; and as a carburatting-agent for liquids of low illuminating power ; and the third as a substitute for turpentine in making varnishes, printers' ink, boot polish, &c. To improve the odour of 'the first fraction, a substance such as amyl acetate may be added before distilling.
